Enter the course management system (CMS), sometimes referred to as Learning Management System (LMS). The CMS secures student information, course content, and tasks in one location. Anecdotally, as evidence of the perceived value of a CMS to organizations, McIntosh (2014) has compiled an extensive and expanding list of learning management systems (LMSs), including 452 corporate LMSs, 200 commercial (i.e., for-profit) education LMSs (ELMSs) such as

  • Blackboard,

  • Canvas,

  • Moodle, and

  • D2L (formerly Desire2Learn).

This course dived deeply into multiple LMS (Learning Management System) and e-Learning Systems. Why does this course use the metaphor of a "fenced playground” to characterize e-learning design within course management systems? In the next few weeks, you will be considering this question and try to come up with your own answer for your professional setting.
